CEMENTS & COATINGS

Roof coatings serve as a barrier between the elements and your roof. Most of them are waterproof and reflective, which helps protect the roof from leaks and slow down the sun rays’ effects on the roof. Roof coatings also help to reduce the temperature of the roof and protect it from weathering.

FASTENERS

Mechanical fasteners are commonly used to secure the insulation and roofing membrane to the structural roof deck. Each metal fastener creates a thermal bridge that reduces the effectiveness of the insulation.

INSULATION

Roof insulation performs two basic functions: Acts as a thermal barrier for the top of the building and serves as the roof system base.

UNDERLAYMENT OR ROOFING PAPER

Underlayment on a roof is a membrane applied to the plywood or ‘deck’ of a roof as an extra layer of water penetration protection before shingles are installed. Underlayment isn’t always necessary but should be applied to low-sloped roofs, as well as specific high-water risk areas of your home. Common types:

  • Asphalt-Saturated Felt (Felt Paper)
  • Rubberized Asphalt.
  • Non-Bitumen Synthetics (Synthetic Felt Paper)

VENTS

Roof vents allow hot air to escape keeping the roof and attic cooler and saving on energy costs.  Poor or non-existent ventilation may cause attic temperatures to rise to 150 degrees or higher in the summer. That can lead to damaged shingles and other roofing materials, a buildup of condensation and mildew, and mold development.

Continuous ridge vents are more effective because they are installed at the peak of a roof’s ridge, allowing warm air to escape from the attic. A continuous vent, as opposed to an individual roof vent, is the most effective.

ICE & WATER SHIELD

Ice and water shield are a self-adhering waterproofing underlayment used in Roofing around the roof’s edges to protect against ice damming, plus in valleys and around chimneys and other fixtures prone to leakage.
